Our workbook that Julie put together herself is

Thirty years of being an Educator, Mum, Doula, Trainer, Consumer Advocate has equipped me with vast experience and knowledge, which I am very motivated to share with others who are keen to help, support, assist labouring mums-to-be and dads-to-be to have the most safe, healthy, positive, birth outcome for their baby and for themselves.
Doula’s find this work so rewarding because they make such a massive difference to the birthing family.
Partner’s are not frightened when they have someone to provide guidance.
The woman’s level of comfort, her feelings about the birth afterwards, sense of satisfaction and bonding with her baby is all enhanced by the Doula’s role.
The Doula is very effective in minimising stress, anxiety, worry, and instead she will provide encouragement, reassurance, direction,
good fresh ideas, effective comfort measures and a very good measure of nurturing.
Julie’s Story: I have always been fascinated by biology and psychology. I’ve loved anything to do with nature, babies,
animals, reproduction, birthing, bonding, relationships, families and feelings.
It’s been the most natural progression for me to work in this field, I’ve always been totally drawn to it.
I’ve been to about 150 births over my 30 years of teaching and been so interested to see how all the services and facilities have changed so much over the years,
the improvements have been fabulous for women especially in Sydney since 2010.
We’ve really moved ahead in providing suitable helpful props such as birth stools and big tubs for waterbirth in all the public hospitals.
I’ve birthed my 2 babies naturally, drug, free and using active birth positions; squatting and kneeling. We also had a waterbirth with the 2nd bub which was awesome.
My first birth was 16 hours, natural and at a birth centre, the midwives were terrific and so was the OB who took lots of great photos, he was very gentle, sensitive and caring and I was fortunate to have a friend Mandy who was a trained massage therapist but not a trained Doula. Geoff was terrific and provided plenty of help and support.
It was reassuring having both the male and female energy balance by my side. I have often reflected on how encouraging and balanced that felt for me.
My second birth was super fast and I had a very senior experienced midwife attend me for a planned home birth.
It was beautiful to have my mum looking after our 3.5 yr old son Ken to see his baby brother Ryan being born. I also had a girlfriend Sue who was very positive.
Julie’s Doula information exclusively for the parents-to-be in her courses:
I love going to births and helping women become mothers and men become fathers it’s been one of the most meaningful, moving, significant components of my life’s work.
Being able to quietly, gently, positively enhance this incredibly intimate time for a couple and help them forge a strong bonding relationship with their baby remains one of my many pinnacle moments in my life. I get such a huge buzz and high from helping people – totally love it!
Attending births as a Doula professional birth support person has been one of the most wonderful ways of keeping it real for me as an educator, it helps me stay abreast of the wide range of experiences and possibilities open to women and their partners. I always work respectfully with the hospital staff as a safe, caring, mindful Doula.
Obstetricians find I am obstructive to their care and they can trust me as a sensible balanced Doula, not an extremist. Everyone involved in the maternity field also recognise this is my philosophy in my Doula training course as well; to be safe, respectful caring non obstructive Doulas who are maintaining harmony whilst advocating for the mother-to-be.
Birthing my own 2 babies instilled in me a thorough understanding of womens physical and emotional needs during labour like nothing else could have given me.
I believe empathy and compassion for other women going through the life transition is one of the great gifts of motherhood.
Over my nearly 30 years of training and teaching I have been to about 150 births with great care, sensitivity and enthusiasm.
